Pregnancy and Our Skin

Tonight’s post is all about how pregnancy can affect our skin and how Tomitago’s B1 Baby Salve worked wonders for me throughout mine. Don’t let the name fool you, like all Tomitago products it’s multi-use. It can be beneficial for us adults too as a daily face moisturiser. I started using it months ago when I was in my first trimester.

Pregnancy Hormones

As some of you may know pregnancy can cause havoc on our skin due to the increase in hormones, the changes to our circulatory system as well as the changes to our immune system. We produce more melanin when we’re pregnant to give us extra protection against UV rays, as our skin is more sensitive to the sun when we’re pregnant. This increase in melanin can cause us to develop brown patches across our cheeks, nose or forehead. This pigmentation is often referred to the “mask of pregnancy” and soon disappears after giving birth. Luckily for me I didn’t get it, however I did notice an increase of freckles around my eye area, so I ensured I wore full factor TOTAL BLOCK sun protection every single day.

Normally, my skin is dry, dehydrated with a little sensitivity and redness and Tomitago’s E1 Elixir is my go to daily moisturiser. When I fell pregnant I was waiting for the “glow” you hear so many people rave about but instead what I got was all my little skin issues becoming exacerbated by the influx of hormones running through my system. I became a lot more sensitive, more reactive and had so much more redness. I was also plagued with hormonal breakouts on my chin!

Tomitago’s B1 Baby Salve

2. Tomitago B1 Baby Salve

I messaged Louise, owner of Irish Skincare Brand Tomitago, and asked for her advice and she recommended their B1 Baby Salve, and I used it through my whole pregnancy. The Baby Salve was created specifically for babies over 6 months with dry skin conditions like cradle cap, nappy rash, eczema, and itchy, sensitive, reactive skin on the body.

Buuuut this is a Tomitago product we’re talking about so it has a double use as a daily moisturiser for adults with dry skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis and rosacea.

It’s a little firmer in texture than the E1 Elixir and like the Elixir I find the best way to apply it is to warm a small amount between your fingers and then apply it onto your face. Applying it in this way changes its texture to an oil, giving you more “slip” and more from your product. Its packed full of skin nourishing ingredients and anti-oxidants. It’s super concentrated which means only a small amount is needed. Because of this the tub will last you months.

When applying any moisturiser I always recommend massaging it into the skin in small circular motions using firm pressure on the upward strokes. Never apply firm pressure on the downward stroke. This will cause a “dragging down” on the skin and speed up the aging process…nobody has the time for that!!! Apply it every morning and every night to clean, dry skin.

1. Tomitago B1 Baby Salve

Like all Tomitago products the B1 Baby Salve is 100% chemical free and is made with the finest natural ingredients. You really get the sense of just how natural it is by the smell…it’s beautiful. I wish Louise would make a candle with the scent. Fresh, clean and crisp…no harsh perfume scent either!

Two of the main ingredients are –

  1. Organic, unrefined shea butter – incredibly moisturising on the skin because of its high content of natural vitamins and fatty acids. Shea butter contains a natural element called cinnamic acid, which has amazing anti-inflammatory properties.
  2. German Chamomile – when bought on its own its a super expensive ingredient in skincare. An essential oil known for its healing properties that helps soothe irritated, sensitive, reactive skin types. It also helps reduce redness.

My Results

As my skin was so dry and dehydrated it soaked up the Salve really well and left it feeling velvety soft.  The very next day after first application I could already feel the difference regards irritation. After about 2-3 weeks of using it the texture on my skin was so much better, and I was no longer getting any hormonal breakouts. In fact, I haven’t got a spot since I began using it!!! It felt softer, smoother and appeared to be brighter. After about two months, my redness decreased and my skin wasn’t as reactive. I still have redness in my skin but it isn’t half as bad as what it was. A lot of people complemented my skin during my pregnancy but it wasn’t the “Pregnancy Glow” people are often blessed with, it was the “Tomitago Glow” and I’d highly recommend it for any expecting Mams.

4. Tomitago B1 Baby Salve
My skin with no makeup at around the 33/34 week mark of my pregnancy. Redness, dryness, dehydration, irritation all reduced drastically and not a breakout to be seen.
